Village Level Studies by ICRISAT is "one of the first major panel surveys using a household framework in a developing country" (Strauss and Duncan (1995), page 1892).
ICRISAT provides the list of journal articles using the dataset. Examples include Behrman and Deolalikar (1987, JPE).
Townsend (1994, Econometrica) uses household data from three villages in India (Aurepalle, Kanzara, and Shirapur: see this map on the ICRISAT website for their locations) for the 10 year period between 1975 and 1984.
Fafchamps (1993, Econometrica) and Udry (1996, JPE) use household data from six villages (Woure, Silgey, Kolbila, Ouonon, Koho, and Sayero) in Burkina Faso for the three year period of 1981 to 1983.
