World Fertility Surveys are the preceding version of the DHS surveys, conducted in 41 countries in the late 1970s or the early 1980s.
One potential use of this dataset for non-health related subjects is to derive ethnic composition of sub-national regions in the survey year because the surveys ask the respondents for their ethnicity and their region of residence (variable V707 in the DHS format file).

The WFS was the first survey to use multilingual questionnaires for African countries (see Kiregyera 1982, pp.310-311).
