A dataset on the spatial distribution of population for Africa and Latin America.
The advantage over the Gridded World of the Population is the data availability for 1960, 1970, and 1980.
The raw data is at the level of sub-national districts. Spatial interpolation to create the raster data may be questionable.
The Africa data for 2000 is used by Michalopoulos and Papaioannou (2014).
