China Census Databases of China Data Online by the China Data Center at University of Michigan provide access to Population Census data (subscription required).
The 1982 census is available at IPUMS-International (also see this entry).
The 1990 census is explained at China Data Online, and used by Nancy Qian's papers "Missing Women and the Price of Tea in China" and "Quantity-Quality: The Positive Effect of Family Size on School Enrollment in China".
The 2000 census is also used by Qian (2008) for obtaining the county-level data on years of schooling by cohort by sex and for using the data on whether an individual is currently living in his/her county of birth.
